Studies on the Compressive Strength of Dental Amalgam as Related to Time

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the compressive strength at various time intervals ranging from one hour after condensation to seven days. Three alloys were used, including RTL, Spherical, and Pellet amalgam alloys. The recommended mercury-alloy ratio, was followed for each alloy and a constant size mix was used throughout, and packed by the Amsler Spring Tester with condensation pressure 98.8kg/cm2.
A total of 108 different amalgam test specimens prepared under this condensation pressure were tested for their compressive strength at various time intervals. A Amsler Universal Testing, Machine was used for determining the compressive strength, the load being applied at the rate . of imm/min. ,
From the experiments, the following results were obtained.
1. Comparing with the Pellet amalgam, the RTL and Spherical amalgams have a greater degree"¢¥¢¥ of compressive strength in the initial phase.
2. It was found that the RTL amalgam specimen reached at approximately its maximum strength by the end of the 68 hours.
